Before you go

Once you’ve got a place on a course at a university or college, it’s time to get ready and prepare yourself for student life. The university or college you are going to will send you some information about what to do and when.

Here are some tips:

  • If you haven’t already, make sure you go and have a look around the college or university — some have open days for applicants.
  • If you are leaving home, you’ll need to sort your accommodation as soon as possible — don’t wait until results day!
  • Check to see if you have to do any reading or research to prepare for your course.
  • Make a list of all the books, materials and household items you need and shop around to get the best deal.
  • If you haven’t already, make sure you apply for financial support and make a budget.

If the place on your course is conditional, make sure you know what to do and when on GCSE results day or A level results day.

Settling in

Make sure you check the start date of your course! You’ll need to register for your course when you get there.

Lots of universities and colleges have an induction or freshers’ week and offer plenty of activities to help you settle in to student life. The university or college you’re going to should send you details of what’s happening.

You should also make yourself familiar with the facilities, procedures and support at the university or college, such as:

  • student services or the student welfare office
  • fire procedures — especially if you are moving into university accommodation
  • your local bank, supermarket and other services in your area if you’ve moved away from home — you’ll also need to register with a local doctor, and
  • the students’ union.

Getting involved

Whatever your interests or hobbies, there are lots of activities you can do alongside your studies. Check with the students’ union at your college or university to see what clubs and societies you can join.
