Last Updated - 03/12/2009

Choosing to study abroad can be exciting, but there is a lot you will need to think about and research beforehand. It takes up to 18 months to prepare for studying abroad.

Ways of studying abroad

You can study abroad for your whole Degree or just a part of it.

If you want to study part of your Degree abroad, Erasmus offer exchange programmes in many different countries. You can search their database to find out which UK universities offer them.

If you want to study all of your Degree abroad, there are things you must consider, such as:

  • the language used on the course — it’s unlikely to be English if it’s not an English speaking country!
  • the application procedure and entry requirements — you’ll need to check whether you have suitable qualifications and how to apply, and
  • the qualification you will get — it might not be recognised in the UK if you want to return to get a job.

To find out more, use Exodus — a software program about living, working and studying abroad — available in your local Connexions centre.

Choosing where to study

When choosing which country to study in, you’ll need to look into:

  • what language is used
  • what medical care is likely to be available — if it’s outside the European Union (EU) you may not be entitled to medical care
  • the cost of living — this can be higher or lower than in the UK, and
  • what financial support is available — you may have to prove that you can support yourself.
